Little Free Library

At a co-op neighborhood meeting a couple months back, a friend of mine, Lula, and I spat out an idea we had both been mulling over. We're both reading nerds and have seen these darling little free libraries popping up around the country.  I've seen them on Facebook and random google articles and decided we should add one to our hood too.  Magically, Lula was thinking the same thing.  And so we did it.  Liberty Hill, the HOA, helped fund our efforts.

The single woman who lives on the corner of our street had the perfect spot for a library and gave us permission to utilize her land.  One Saturday, a group of us spent a few hours cleaning up the landscape and clearing it all out.  We laid landscape fabric, spread mulch and trimmed back the bushes.  Our wood working genius resident, Christopher, got to work on building the actual library.  His dad was visiting one weekend and they made it a family effort, which was awesome.  Within a couple weeks, our Little Free Library was complete.  And ridiculously sweet.

 Before.

We held a ribbon cutting for the hood to attend and donate books.  Kids were asked to paint a large rock that will be use as a border around the area.  Chris, Lula and I cut the red ribbon and everyone added their books to the mini library.  Kids parked it on the benches we placed on either side and they read their little hearts out. Exactly what we envisioned.

The library even attracts mini super heroes.

Squirt only wants to read the books we donate of course.

As I drive by on a day to day basis I see people of all ages dropping by, delivering books and taking home what interests them.  When we go on walks, we stop and read a book with the kids and everyone who drives by smiles.  You just can't help it.  We're proud our little red house on the corner.  Stop by and pay it a visit if you're local.  Our books are your books.

Check out the Little Free Library website for more info on libraries in your hood.
